How to Repot Your Phalaenopsis Orchid: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Repotting your Phalaenopsis orchid is the single most impactful thing you can do for its long-term health. Done right, it removes rot, refreshes the growing medium and gives your orchid the clean start it needs to thrive.
Here's the full process, exactly as we teach it.
Step 1: The 24-Hour Bark Soak (Crucial)
This step surprises most beginners but it's non-negotiable.
Dry fir bark repels water. If you pot your orchid in dry bark and water it, the water runs straight through without absorbing. Your orchid stays thirsty even though the pot is "wet."
How to do it:
- Place your fir bark in a large bowl
- Cover completely with warm water
- Wait 24 hours. This opens the wood pores so bark can hold moisture properly
- Drain and rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Let it drain well before using
Step 2: Prep, Treat & Revive
Prep: Remove your orchid from its pot. Trim away every dead, mushy or hollow root with clean scissors. Cut back to firm tissue.
H₂O₂ Soak (10 minutes): Soak the roots in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 10 minutes to help prevent and stop root rot. Rinse gently with clean water.
K-Power Soak (10 minutes): Soak roots in K-Power solution (½ tsp in 4 cups of clean water) for 10 minutes. This reduces transplant stress and encourages strong new root growth.
Your orchid is now clean, treated and ready for fresh bark.
Step 3: Fill, Water & Secure
Pack: Gently drop the damp, pre-soaked bark around the roots. Work it in carefully. Don't force it.
Settle: Tap the pot on a table to help the bark settle. Do not pack too tightly. Phalaenopsis roots need room to breathe.
Water: Pour any remaining K-Power solution over the potted orchid and let it drain completely.
Then wait 7 days before watering again.
This is the part most people skip and it matters. The 7-day wait allows any tiny tears in the roots to heal before they're exposed to moisture again. Watering too soon invites rot back in.
